**Individuals who are eligible for Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position (s) .

The Support Services Assistant (Interpreter) (SSAI) will facilitate communications accurately, effectively and impartially using sign language for hearing impaired and severely speech impaired incarcerated people. The SSAI will also perform other duties related to assisting in the communication process. The SSAI is under the direct supervision of the Institution’s Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Coordinator and Indirect supervision of the Warden. This position may require the SSAI to travel to other correctional institutions, other than their assigned facility, if needed by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR). Overtime hours may be necessary when required for emergency circumstances. In compliance with the Code of Ethics as set forth by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, the SSAI will perform sign language interpreting services to uphold effective communications standards and ongoing compliance with Federal, State and Departmental ADA laws, regulations, policies and procedures.

Respond to requests for sign language interpreting communications via telephone, in person, email or pager to provide a wide range of sign language interpreting services for hearing impaired, hard of hearing incarcerated people and severely speech impaired incarcerated people that rely on sign language for effective communication.

The incumbent may be required to provide interpreter services through videoconferencing for incarcerated people at other institutions. Communications include but are not limited to, interpreting for incarcerated people in the Incarcerated People Disciplinary Process, Administrative Segregation Unit Placements, Classification Committee Process, Computation Review Process, Health Care Delivery, Caseworker contacts, Incarcerated Person Appeals Process, Participation in the Education Programs, Board Hearings and related Parole proceedings, Attorney visits, and will interview hearing impaired and severely speech impaired incarcerated people to determine their methods of communication.

The California Department of Corrections Rehabilitation (CDCR) Headquarters has implemented a new automated system to streamline the hiring process. The Human Resources Technology System (HRTS) is an intuitive, user-friendly system that provides the applicant access to real- time updates throughout the hiring process. HRTS will require new candidates to set up an account, which allows them to track their application’s progress. Through their account portal, candidates will also be able to provide any additional information needed in the hiring process, including setting up interviews as needed. Working Conditions

Employees in the above classification who are employed by CDCR in the capacity of an American Sign Language interpreter will receive $2500 per pay period in addition to the monthly salary.

San Quentin Rehab Center is California’s oldest and best-known correctional institution, which was established on the site currently known as Point San Quentin, in July of 1852, as an answer to the rampant lawlessness in California at the time. The prison rests overlooking the bay on 432 acres and is located just 12 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge in the county of Marin. The walled prison is made up of four (4) large cell blocks (West, South, North, and East Block), one (1) maximum security cell block (the Adjustment Center), Central Health Care Service Building, a medium security dorm setting and a minimum-security firehouse.

Candidates new to CDCR/CCHCS are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting, as well as a Tuberculosis test/evaluation prior to appointment, followed by department annual Tuberculosis testing/evaluation thereafter.
